Author: John Benton
Average review score:

great for evangelism
This little book is great!! J. Benton has done a great
job in explaining the full gospel in easy to understand
everyday language. This booklet would be great to pass out
to friends, family and strangers on the street. No big words
for people to look up and only about 10 pages long. It explains
who God is, who man is, how man has sinned and broken the law of God and what Christ has done on behalf of sinners..
Great book, i plan on getting many top pass out.

Contemporary Silver: Commissioning, Designing, Collecting
Published in Hardcover by Merrell Publishers (June, 2000)
Authors: Benton Seymour Rabinovitch and Helen Clifford
Average review score:

Must-Have Book on Silver
Looking for a book on contemporary silver?

If you go to the Web and enter "contemporary silver" in a search engine, what comes up? Not much, right? Go into Amazon.com and look there as well. You'll find just one book: Contemporary Silver: Commissioning, Designing, Creating. Sure, you'll find a few out-of-print books published in Europe, but who has the time to brush up on their German? The authors of Contemporary Silver are Benton Seymour Rabinovitch and Helen Clifford, Ph.D. Rabinovitch is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Washington, Seattle, a member of the Silver Society (London), and Honorary Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. He is a longtime collector of antique silver and serving pieces and is the author of Antique Silver Servers for the Dining Table. Clifford has a number of degrees, is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, member of the Silver Society (London), and an honorary member of the Association of British Designer-Silversmiths. She has written and curated exhibitions on historical and contemporary silver.

The two authors have produced a book that is both beautiful and inspiring. Rabinovitch commissioned 62 notable silversmiths from the United States and Great Britain to design and create silver serving pieces in fish-server or cake-slice form. The result is an incredible range of servers in every conceivable technique. From the minimalist to the baroque, from the abstract to the representational, all are meant for practical use, though cleaning some of the more intricate pieces would certainly be a challenge.

These servers demonstrate mastery of the craft, and offer a comparative survey in technique and design between the two countries.

Each of the 62 pieces illustrated (75 have been commissioned to date) has a full description, including materials used, dimensions, and narrative, an artist's philosophy/statement, and brief personal history. Rabinovitch also comments on how he chose each silversmith for the commission.

Within the 160 pages lie chapters on the commissioning process; historical background on servers in the 18th and 19th centuries; silver design in Britain and the U.S. between 1950 and 2000; understanding the collection; the collection itself; and a helpful glossary of terms.

Inspiring
My boys...were immediately inspired by the fascinating
projects in this book! However, they are not able to make
the projects independently. I would highly recommend this
book for parents of kids who are willing to get their hands
dirty and for parent of kids who like multi-day projects.
We had a blast building a full model Stegasarous and T-rex,
but we spent many hours building them.

You will need to go to other resources for full details
about how/when/where the dinos lived. This is mostly a project
book and less of a reference book. But the projects are so
fun and interesting, it will make you want to learn more.

Exchanging Hats: Paintings
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (October, 1996)
Authors: Elizabeth Bishop and William Benton
Average review score:

A Poet's Paintings
Elizabeth Bishop was an elusive and multi-faceted woman. Gaining a glimpse of her through her poetry, some details through her prose, she has remained enigmatic, despite the many volumes of criticism and biography dedicated to her life and art. Her paintings show us another side of her creativity, and in "Exchanging Hats" we are provided with a greater depth of understanding of her creative abilities. The paintings themselves, spare and pragmatic, are as geographical and domestic as her poetry. More subtle than they first appear, they illuminate her life from a different perspective. For anyone interested in Bishop, this book is essential.

From Biotech to Hollywood: New Career Opportunities in Technology
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall Press (December, 2002)
Authors: Debra A. Benton and Lauren Doliva
Average review score:

Excellent book!
Having read all of Debra Benton's books, and also working in the technology field, I was interested to read what she'd have to say about this field currently mired in gloom and doom. Unlike some of her other books, which reiterate and build upon the principles outlined in "How to Think Like a CEO" and "Lions Don't Need to Roar" -- both great books, btw -- this book focuses more on new material for how a person can be successful with a technology-related position starting today and looking into the future.

From the opening of the book, there isn't even a specter of gloom and doom about the future of technology. Rather, Debra has opened up a gleam of light about how technology is still a viable career choice, and how a person can leverage their technical training and experience in both technical and some not-so-technical fields.

Highly recommended reading!

Average review score:

Excellent! Need I say more?
This book is an excellent, easy-reading way of learning about the tragedies that occurred in Poland between 1939-1945. It's an account of a young girl and what she faces during war. It's a shame that the book is no longer in print. I definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about Poland's struggle with Germany.
